What is RumRunner?

RumRunner is an open-world sailing RPG set in the Age of Sail, where you can build ships, run contraband, trade legally, farm, craft, and explore a dangerous, living world—solo or in 4-player co-op. Choose your path as a smuggler, trader, or peaceful homesteader.

Is RumRunner multiplayer?

Aye! RumRunner supports both single-player and co-op multiplayer (up to 4 players). You can explore and trade solo or team up with friends to build your smuggling empire.

What platforms will RumRunner be available on?

We're currently developing for PC with plans to release on Steam. Console support is being explored but is not confirmed yet.

What kind of gameplay can I expect?

Expect a mix of:

  • Shipbuilding and customization

  • Resource gathering and farming

  • Crafting weapons, tools, and rum

  • Base-building and outpost management

  • Trade, smuggling, and naval encounters

  • Dynamic NPC interactions and AI factions

Can I play as a pacifist?

Aye, you can sail the seas without firing a single shot. While RumRunner features smuggling, naval combat, and high-stakes encounters, violence isn't the only way to carve out a legacy. If you prefer a more peaceful route, the game fully supports pacifist playstyles.

You can build and expand your homestead, tend to crops and animals, and craft everything from tools to top-shelf spirits. Focus on legal trade routes, barter with local factions, and establish a thriving operation without ever lifting a weapon. You might not be feared on the high seas—but you’ll be respected in every port for your coin and craftsmanship.

Whether you want to be a quiet coastal farmer, a master brewer, or a merchant kingpin, RumRunner gives you the freedom to shape your journey on your own terms—cannonballs optional.

Is there a story or questline?

Yes, RumRunner features a loose narrative framework with optional questlines, lore, and faction missions. However, it's designed as a sandbox-first experience, allowing for freedom and emergent storytelling.

When will RumRunner be released?

We will be releasing a detailed roadmap in early to mid August 2025, we have a Development Outline up on our roadmap page now.
